Appalachian Log Home Care: Products to protect and beautify the home of your dreamsAppalachian Log Home Care: Products to protect and beautify the home of your dreams

DESCRIPTION DESCRIPTION:
DEFY is a high performance, water based wood finish formulated to prevent the damaging effects of water, fungi, and UV radiation on exterior wood. It is a V.O.C. compliant blend of natural and synthetic resins which penetrates wood pores to block out water and provide long-lasting protection from weather damage. The product's excellent penetration helps eliminate surface build-up and peeling, making future maintenance coats easier to apply. A unique feature of DEFY is that it contains nutrient-free resins, instead of high levels of fungicides, to prevent mold and mildew growth. DEFY protects wood from warping, checking, swelling, cupping and damage from wet/dry cycles.

USES:
DEFY can be used on interior or exterior wood surfaces including: wood siding, log homes, decks, fences, shake shingles, outdoor wood funiture, pressure-treated and all other natural wood surfaces. DEFY is available in clear, as well as a wide range of transparent finishes. Clear will allow wood to age to a silver or light gray color.
BENEFITS:
* Waterproofs
* Superior UV resistance
* Mold and mildew resistant
* Will not flake or peel
* Soap and water clean up
* Easy to maintain
DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Surface preparation for new and aged woods: Wood surfaces must be clean and porous. Use Saver Systems' wood cleaner/brightener, TimberWash TM, to remove mill glaze, dirt, mildew, graying, previous coatings, or other foreign matter that might block surface pores and interfere with product penetration. Rinse thoroughly with power washer (minimum 1500 p.s.i.) and allow to dry 12-24 hours. Drying time will vary with environmental conditions. For dense woods like cedar, light sanding before application may be necessary to ensure proper penetration. Note: For cleaning redwood: TimberWash will darken redwood. Use Saver Systems concentrated brightener TimberBrite to clean and restore redwood. Check wood porosity: sprinkle a few drops of water on wood to be treated. If the water penetrates within 1-2 seconds the wood is ready to be treated. If not, allow wood to dry longer and retest. Weather conditions: surface and air temperatures should be between 45 and 95 degrees farenheit. Avoid application in direct sunlight. Apply product to southern exposed areas during coolest part of the day. Surface may be slightly damp, but not wet or water saturated. Do not apply when rainfall is expected within 12 hours unless protected with a polyethylene film or its equivalent.
APPLICATION:
Test a small area before starting general application to assure desired results and coverage rates. Do not use on painted or varnished surfaces. Stir thoroughly before using. Do not thin product. Provide adequate ventilation. Shake or stir contents before, and periodically during, use. To ensure absolute color uniformity from container to container, mix at least 1/3 of the product from a used container with the contents of a new one. Use plastic, cardboard and/or drop clothes to protect all adjacent non-targeted surfaces such as siding, windows, masonry, plant life etc. from overspray and runoff.
Methods of Application:
Brush:
Use a good quality nylon or polyester brush.
Roller: Use a synthetic roller with 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch nap depending on wood texture. Backbrush to ensure penetration.
Sponge pad applicators: sponge pads are excellent for finishing decks and smooth wood surfaces. Do not use on rough wood.
Spray: use lowest pressure that achieves a uniform spray pattern to minimuze fogging and overspray. For airless sprayers use tips between .011 and .018. A Saver Systems sprayer/applicator or other pump-up sprayer may also be used. Always backbrush to ensure a uniform application.
General Application:

Saturate wood with two wet-on-wet coats for maximum protection. Apply first coat and brush or backroll product into surface working out all drips, puddles, or areas of overspray before product dries. Use the same method to apply a second coat within 5-10 minutes, or as soon as possible. Do not allow drying between coats. To avoid lap marks, do not stop in the middle of boards, logs, or sections. Note: Complete entire sections or to a natural break before allowing to dry. Since the end grain of wood is more absorbent, it is important to throughly coat the ends of boards or logs to prevent water penetration. All surface checks on logs should be thoroughly coated.
Vertical Surfaces: Start from the bottom and work up. Treat the entire length of a board before moving up. If necessary, brush or feather in to avoid lap marks. Brush or roll in product before it dries and work out all drips, runs, or overspray.
Decks: Remove all furniture, grills, planters, etc. Start by applying DEFY to the outside of railings, benches, and undersides of upper level decks (only one coat is required on undersides). Once underside is treted, immediately brush out all overspray, drips, etc. on top deck. Treat horizontal surfaces last. Proceed with general application.
Wood Shingles: Clean and test for porosity. Apply 2 heavy saturation coats, wet on wet. Backroll, or brush between coats to ensure a uniform application. Make sure all drips and puddles are brushed out. To avoid lap marks, start at the bottom and treat entire length of roof before moving up. Recoat is necessary when wood starts to turn light gray in color.
HELPFUL HINTS:
Because DEFY forms a long-lasting bond with all surfaces, it is important to remove overspray from non-targeted areas immediately with soap and water. Overspray that is allowed to dry may be difficult or impossible to remove. If allowed to dry, product cannot be removed from concrete and masonry.
Dry time:
to touch; 2 to 6 hours depending on temperature and humidity. Allow 24 hours for decks to dry before using.
Clean up: clean tools and equipment immediately after use with soap and water. Remove overspray or spillage immediately with soap and water.
Coverage: with two wet-on-wet coats, one gallon of DEFY will cover approximately 150-300 sq. ft. per gallon, depending on wood texture and porosity.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. May cause skin irritation. Avoid breathing vapors or mists which may be irritating or harmful if inhaled. Use only with adequate ventilation. For additional information, consult the Material Safety Data Sheet.
Caution: Accumulation of product on ladders, scaffolding, decks, etc. may result in a slippery surface.
LIMITED WARRANTY
Our recommendations for use of this product are based upon tests believed to be reliable. Since field conditions vary widely, the user must determine the suitability of the product for the particular use and specific method(s) of application. Due to the fact that Saver Systems has no control over surface preparation and application methods, no guarantee as to results is offered, expressed, or implied. Saver Systems only warrants the contents of the container. If the product is defective, a refund of the material cost or replacement material will be provided at the manufacturer's option. Labor costs are not covered by this warranty. Responsibility for claims of any kind are strictly limited to the purchase price of the material.
AVAILABILITY AND COST
DEFY is available from distributors and dealers throughout North America. "In place" cost of DEFY will vary with project conditions and regional considerations. Specific job costs may be obtained from any Saver Systems distributor or dealer.
Packaging: Packaged in 1 and 5 Gallons recyclable plastic containers.
Transport and storage: DEFY is not considered hazardous under Depart of Transportation regulations. Do not stack pallets. Keep product from freezing.
MAINTENANCE:
Remove all substances which might stain or hold moisture on treated surfaces as quickly as possible to minimuze damage. Occasional cleaning with mild detergent and water will generally restore treated surfaces to their original appearance. For maximum protection, a light maintenance coat is recommended on horizontal surfaces every 12-24 months depending on foot traffic and environmental conditions. Vertical surfaces should be retreated every 3-5 years, before wood starts graying.
